This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet. These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or center, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth. In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... And now, they have been seized by the Great King's eight Dukes, in a desperate bid to gain control of the world for themselves. They have banished the King to the nuclear wastelands, and already their squabbling threatens to plunge the world into war once again! The task of retrieving the 8 Eyes falls to you, Orin the Falconer, the bravest and mightiest of the King's Guardsmen. With your fighting falcon, Cutrus, you must penetrate each of the 8 Dukes' castles. There you will face the Dukes' soldiers, and battle strange nuclear mutants such as living skeletons, giant wasps, and mud men. You must defeat the monstrous Boss of each castle to retrieve the Jewel of Power he guards. Then, to complete your quest, return the 8 Eyes to the Altar of Peace to await the return of the Great King, so that he may finish the rebuilding of Earth. Your reward will be the eternal gratitude of all mankind!***

Protect a crawling baby by blasting obstacles and dangers out of the way.

A non-violent Zapper game. Two people can play simultaneously with a controller+zapper scheme. Zapper not required for 1 player.

There are blue and black variants of this cartridge. However, Color Dreams employees say they only produced blue carts for this game.

The game mentions Baby Boomer 2, but development on Baby Boomer 2 was never even began. It is complete vaporware. Check the spoiler for details.
"You won the game!! But Boomer is in the wrong baby carriage! Wait for Baby Boomer 2 to see what happens to our hero next!"
This game was ported to a PAL version but it supposedly was never published in PAL countries. The prototype has not been located.

Gradiente Published this game in South America

Baby Blaster was the working title.

This game was actually created only to use to create a better development system for NES games. It turned out to be the first game Color Dreams published.

Challenger  Hudson Soft1985 3dsvirtualconsole birds did ghosts lives rescue score thrownweapons timelimit train-location walking wiivirtualconsole Challenger consists of several scenes. The first one is a platform scene on a running train, then the game switches to an overworld view. Around the overworld you have to visit little caves (again in side-view) and ultimately have to find the princess and rescue her. The highlight of the game are the graphics. Especially the first scene on a train (featuring parallax scrolling) is impressive for a game from 1985. The gameplay though is far from being a real rival to either [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game] in the side-view scenes or [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] in the overworld-scenes. labelimageminimize

The game features eight levels with an overworld/castle and a complex maze, mostly containing an important object, which is needed for further progress. The game could have been good if the locations wouldn't be so confusing (much is hidden behind destroyable blocks, there are one-way doors etc.) and if the controls were better. labelimageminimize
City Adventure Touch: Mystery of Triangle  Toho (Compile)1987 animateobjects birds bossbattles chiroptera city domesticcats forest ghosts inventory lagomorphs limitedcapacity manga mice mp-cooperative rescue skeletons thrownweapons unarmedfighting ursines walking A game based on the highschool/sports manga and anime series "Touch". Your goal is to rescue ten cats which are hidden somewhere in a huge city and its surroundings. You are controlling two male characters at the same time (another female character is constantly following you around). That makes controlling the characters very complicated. You have to buy items from time to time to open up new part of the game world or to beat some bosses. The game is not very playable. Worst thing is the very limited inventory space. In order to free some space you have to drop several items from time to time. But this can only be done in certain houses! Also, shuffling through the inventory items is bothersome. The city is a huge maze with many streets, a forest, beach etc. Its hard to find your way around without a map and walkthrough. Compile should have kept with making great shoot'em ups instead of doing such a below average Action-Adventure game. labelimageminimize

Deadly Towers  Brøderbund;Irem (Lenar)1986 actionadventure amoeboids bossbattles bossrush censored chiroptera consoleclassix constructionsite currency dawnofanewage difficulty-single earth ghosts hard inventory ladders maleprotagonist mapdeficient monsters noports projectilelimit savepassword scorpions secrets secrets-mandatory secrets-spots shopping snakes spiders stoneage subterranean swords walking You are young Prince Myer, setting out to defend the ancient kingdom of Willner. Rubas, King of Devils, has built a castle in the north and is preparing to invade your kingdom. Ringing magic bells, he is calling out an army of the most terrifying creatures known (or unknown) to man. To defeat Rubas, you must journey to his palace and burn down his seven bell towers. On your quest, you will collect weapons and armor to defend yourself against rats and crawlers; bats, snakes and slime; demons, dragons and more. You'll need every ounce of help you can get. For you are all that stands between your people and the forces of darkness.***Deadly Towers is a mixed-bag. The gameplay is similar to [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game], with the perspective being a bit more 3D-ish. For a game released in 1986 it looks rather advanced. The graphics are nice, the music is good and the game is huge. The game has major flaws however. Some of them are not uncommon for an early NES game. Many necessary items are very well hidden in non-obvious spots. The difficulty level is too high. In this game the beginning is even the hardest part of the game. Being badly equipped you have barely a chance againts the many monsters. Sometimes when you run over a certain spot you are teleported into a dungeon. And you cannot immediately leave the dungeon, until you find the exit. Making things worse, the dungeons are huge 16x16 screen mazes with many difficult monsters. And only in these dungeons you can find shops where you can buy some better equipment to survive the final seven towers where seven bells are hidden, which you must find and destroy in order to challenge the end boss. Now with a walkthrough and cheat at hand I could avoid the biggest frustration, but I understand people who say that this game is a game design disaster.***"Mashou" is used in official documentation.

Journey through this 3D looking game to collect the evil magic bells from the 7 bell towers and burn them in the sacred flame.

Mashō literally means "Evil Bell" an is a pun of 魔性 which means meaning "devilishness." It was supposed to be titled "Hell's Bells," in English but this title qualified for Nintendo's unwritten censorship rules. Oddly, there are Holy Crosses shown all through the game and the game is pretty blatant that God himself has personally asked the game's protagonists to complete this quest.

This game has a very long crawl screen of text. Possibly the longest crawl of any game previous and I can't think of a longer since. The text mentions that the castle explored in the game is actually under construction. This can thinly justify the level structure.

[Zerothis]***I'm surprised to find this game listed on many 'worst games of all time' lists. Ya, its insanely hard. And true, the character and enemies moves in plain 2D even though the enemies are (not) placed in a weird pseudo 3D non-existent environment. And, I'll admit, generally hidden/invisible entrances are used for required main levels instead of just secret bonus areas. And, ok, 20 hit points for the first enemy encountered in the game that isn't even a boss and doesn't even have a name, and doesn't even have a face, or a brain, or limbs, or multiple colors, is a bit excessive. Oh and instead of finding a way to the remotest part of the dungeons, grabbing the treasure and being teleported out, the player is teleported into the remotest part of the insanely complex dungeons, loses treasures, and must find their own way out. It could be worse, imagine if it had no continue option (which is easily exploited btw.
Start the game, die, then change the first two letters of your continue password to "EF" or "FE".
Wimpy). However, I like it for the challenge, I find the false 3Dishness very retro (by 1986 standards), in a good way. This game proceeded [gameid=9176]The Legend of Zelda[/gameid] and in many ways its better, imo. The size of dungeons and the order of their 'completion' are superior. Deadly towers was actually the 2nd NES game I ever played after Super Mario Bros. It took me about 300 hours to beat. This game gets 4.5 stars by me.

Doraemon  Hudson Soft1986 anime bossbattles cemetery city crabs doraemon dragons fish flyingsaucers ghosts giantseahorses goldbars lives mice nofalldamage octopus park robotprotagonist score secrets testudines underwater underwaterdiving walking witches The first Doraemon game for a Nintendo console consists of three very different stages. In the first stage you run around in a maze-like city with several underground passages that have important extra items. The second stage is a typical shoot'em up sequence with horizontal and vertical scrolling parts. In the third and last stage you have to swim underwater, collect items which opens walls and chests and find your three friends and finally rescue a girl at the end. Technically this game is rather good, there is nearly no flickering and the graphics look ok. Difficulty is rather high. The most annoying part of the game is the third stage and its way you collect and manage your items. You can only carry one item (or two with an extra bag) at the same time. And only three items may be in one screen at once or they don't carry over to the next screen. The game, despite its huge success in Japan, has a bad reputation, but all in all its a pretty average and sadly unfair game. labelimageminimize

Not as non-linear and confusing than many early CRPGs. Nice graphics and music as well.***Product Number: NES-DQ-CAN NES-DQ-USA
Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and strictly uses Early Modern English in conversational dialogs. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

SQF-FY ファイナルファンタジーII/Final Fantasy II published 1988-12-17 by Square in Japan.
Final Fantasy II: Dark Shadow Over Palakia was going to be the title of the USA publishing.
MSRP: 6,500円

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

This is the Final Fantasy volume that introduced Chocobos and Cid

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

Gauntlet Tengen;Gradiente (Tengen)1988 arenashooter consoleclassix dandylike death gauntlet-series ghosts hunger keys keys-disposable mp-cooperative npcgenerators pushwalls savepassword Gauntlet is a classic, I liked to play it on my old C64. The NES features 100 levels and can be played with two players simultaneously. So what could possibly go wrong? Well the difficulty level for instance. It's incredibly hard bordering on unplayable hard. When there are lots of enemies on screen the action slows down considerably. Well I must admit that I did kind of expect it due to the capabilites of the NES and the sheer number of enemies that are on screen at the same time. Nevertheless while it might have been considered a nice game back in the day I was a bit disappointed with this version.***
[63]***The arcade sensation comes home. This is it. The game everybody's been waiting for, Gauntlet, the most successful arcade game of all time has come home. And it brings with it all the characters, dungeons, traps, treasures, and excitement you loved in the arcades.***Not the best conversion (and why is the Elf brown?!??!)
[unknown]***1 player or 2 players simultaneous.

Buyers beware of the official description. This conversion is different from the coin-op. No 4-player feature obviously (no adaptor yet existed for the NES). The Dungeon Master's voiceis not present. Gameplay gains a story, world map, and ability upgrades. 99 stages are divided into Castle, Forest, Caverns, Water, and Volcano regions. There are additional bonus treasure rooms. 8 additional clue rooms have clue boxes that are all needed to gain access to the boss room (room 100). There are also push-walls for gaining access to secrets. Gathering 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 treasures will result in ability upgrades. Collecting 2000 treasures apperently breaks the password feature (poorly implimented adaptive difficulty or bug?) by giving unusable passwords.

First North American NES game based on a North American movie.***I really liked the original C64 version of Ghostbusters, but this NES conversion is really bad. Why is this so? Well, the goal is the same. You drive around the streets of New York to find buildings infested with ghosts and catch them. Catching ghosts gives money which can be spend on better items like better beam weapons or ghost traps as well as items that come in handy at the "endgame", which consists of climbing a long staircase and battle Gozer. But the execution of all the parts are just not well done. The music is much worse than in the C64 version and its the same Ghostbusters tune through all the game's parts. The part where you are driving to your next destination is nasty, because you often crash against other cars losing money as a result and you have to keep an eye on your fuel-meter. Both annoying elements were not in the C64 version. Also the endgame has changed quite a lot. In the C64 version you had a short action scene with a little ending sequence, while in the NES version one of the most gruesome parts of all time awaits you. You have to climb staircases to the top of a 22-floor building. Moving is done by repeatedly pressing button A. Four ghosts are flying around the screen, which can kill you after a few hits. The ghosts have a very unprecise hit detection and constantly pressing button A makes you curse the person who was responsible for designing this part of the game. Finally on top of the building you have to battle the endboss Gozer. If you want to play a Ghostbusters game try the C64 version or the Master System version, which has nearly identical gameplay as the NES version but with better playability and graphics.

[52]***The Ghosts 'n Goblins series is known for its harsh difficulty level and sadly the NES version is no exception. On top of that you have to play through the game twice to see the real ending. However, if you are up for a real challenge (or have a good method to cheat at hand), the game might become enjoyable, because it features great graphics and music for an early NES game and is an all in all very faithful arcade conversion regarding the limited capabilities of the Famicom/NES.***Ghosts'n Goblins was a popular arcade game before it made the leap to the NES in 1986. Like later games in the series, Ghosts'n Goblins presents quite a challenge to players brave enough to take on the role of Arthur and delve into the realm of demons and monsters to rescue the kidnapped princess. Choose your weapons wisely and take advantage of their strengths to deal with the situation at hand. Pass through the six gates that stand between you and Astaroth, and teach him a lesson in chivalry he'll never forget. Demonstrating a high level of technical prowess for a game of its era, Ghosts'n Goblins presents a unique and unforgettable universe. The stage for adventure is set. Are you up to the test?

This route is a famous historical route which consists of 53 stations. Each of the games levels represents one station of the route. Since the game only has 21 levels not all stations are included. And of course the route is dangerous, because you are followed and attacked by henchmen of an evil merchant who wants to steal the secret of fireworks manufacturing from you. The game itself is a standard platform game. You make your way from left to right, avoid enemies or kill them via throwing explosives. On the way you can collect hidden items which help passing some otherwise especially nasty enemies. Also you have to find gold coins, which at some points in the game make a platform appear without which you can't progress further. [100]***King's Knight is one of the pre Final Fantasy games and looking at screenshots you might get the opinion that this is a typical action-adventure in Legend of Zelda style. But it is not. It is a vertical scrolling shooting game and a bit unusual. That's because you are controlling four different characters. The first four levels are training stages for each of the characters. In these training stages you have to upgrade your characters by collecting powerups which give you better defense, shooting, speed or jumping abilities as well as extra magical abilities. Nearly everything is hidden beneath rocks, buildings or trees, which can all be shot down. As more powerups you collect as easier will be the fifth and final stage. In the fifth stage you control all of the surviving characters simultaneously, being able to switch the lead character at some points. For a shooting game this feels very strange and ends up less interesting as it might sound. Graphics, music and controls are average and must have felt rather unimpressive when it was released three years after the initial Japanese release in the US in 1989.***キングスナイト is transliteration of "king's knight" and literally reads
kingusu naito
.***In the kingdom of Izander, the fair Princess Claire has been kidnapped by a foul and insidious dragon, and it is the mission of four brave fighters to save her. Through five thrilling, fast-action stages, our gallant heroes-a knight, a wizard, a monster and a thief-will take on an army of incredible enemies. You must help them reach their goal, as you are now part of the team that will fight to free the princess from her imprisonment. [30]***From time to time I get surprised by games, something that Konami Wai Wai World achieves. I did not expect a strange crossover platform/action title starring a dozen or so of Konami's heroes. The main protagonists are Konami-Man and Konami-Girl who try to rescue kidnapped Konami heroes from their respective levels. And there you have them all. Castlevania, The Goonies, Getsu Fuumaden, Goemon and even a classic vertical scrolling shooting level very similar to Twinbee and Life Force. Once you rescue one of the other Konami heroes you can switch to them whenever you want and use their special abilities which are sometimes needed in order to rescue the next hero. Otherwise the six starting levels can be finished in any order you want. Graphics are fine with lots of different stages and enemies and the music resembles the classic tunes of the other games which is a good idea. The bad part of the game is the gameplay itself, which is only slightly above average with some very difficult moments. Walking down stairs, and hitting enemies proved to be more annoying than I hoped.

The game is colorful and cartoony looking. The levels are very varied and sometimes contain sub-levels where you have to collect an extra item which helps you to leave the main level. Controls are also OK. The first levels are easy enough, but in later levels when the cats are actually running faster than you the game becomes much more difficult. A good sequel to a cute arcade classic.

A young boy, Mark, returns from a ball game and meets a gargoyle alien named Bert. Bert chose Mark to help him out, so he took Mark to his own world and 'fused' with Mark's body.
Now, Mark, with the trusty power of his baseball bat (which can be used to hit projectiles, sending them back at the enemy) and the ability to turn into the flying laser-firing Bert for a short time from taking a special pill, must go through eight weird, colorful levels (the first level gets freaky halfway through, with happy faces turning into bloody skulls and creepy faces), and over 20 bosses ranging from just plain silly (like a potted plant that says 'Hello Baby', a bouncing piece of fried shrimp, and a giant kitten) to the really eldritch (a bunch of weird faces, the Grim Reaper, and the final eyeball boss).
What's even stranger about the game is its freaky and slightly disturbing (and a little gory) ending, and the fact that this Japanese game didn't come out in Japan.

Both legitimate versions that take advantage of some irregularities in Japanese copyright filing and illegal versions. There are also Brazilian and Australian releases that are probably based on the Tengen version but could also be yet another version of Ms. Pac-Man. And there's Hong Kong, Chinese, and Korean version that may be legitimate and based on one of these. However, there is a Famicom Disk System version that may be the basis for all of these***This is Tengen's implementation of Ms.Pac-Man released in the USA. Tengen's version was not licensed by Nintendo and did not carry the 'Nintendo's seal of $10 has been added to the price of this cart'. However, Atari Games (which is also Tengen), did hold the rights to produce Pac-Man games for home systems in the USA at the time; This is a perfectly legitimate cart as far as Tengen's preexisting legal agreement with Namco. Tengen's version has many game variations. 1 Player, 2 Player Alternating, 2 Player Simultaneous Competitive, 2 Player Simultaneous Cooperative (Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man). Arcade, mini, big, or strange maze sets. Optional pac-boost (super fast Pac-Man). Large scrolling mazes. 4 levels of difficulty. Namco's version did not have these features, did have Nintendo's seal, cost more, and was release over 3 years later.

[37]***Solomon's Key is a mix of puzzle and platform game. In each level you have to have to find a key which opens the exit door to the next level. With your magical wand you can make blocks appear and disappear. Thus you can free or build you way to the key or exit door. Many monsters roam the levels, which can be killed with limited charges of fireballs. Under many blocks extra items can be found, like extra charges, extra time and so on. In 1986 the gameplay felt fresh and motivating. Biggest problem is the harsh difficulty level. Later rooms not only require good thinking and planning, but also super-fast reactions. Additionally you have a lifemeter, which is actually just some kind of a timer. And the time runs out sooner than you think.

Spelunker II: Yuushahe no Chousen  Irem (Now Production)1987 adventurerprotagonist bossbattles falldamage firearms forest ghosts keys knives knockback ladders meleeweapons movingplatforms mysticprotagonist psychics spelunker-series spiders subterranean swimming swords titularcharacter undead zombies For the sequel to Spelunker the developers changed quite a lot of gameplay elements. You can choose between one of three different characters (explorer, priest and esper) each with its own life and "holy" stat bonuses and different attacks/weapons. The way is often blocked by doors which need the appropriate key and there are also very few adventure/puzzle elements with hints hiding in bonus items. You explore a forest and underground caves in search for three orbs guarded by evil bosses to ultimately rescue a fairy kingdom. Well, Spelunker II is a bit better than its predecessor, but still the controls aren't the best. The most annoying thing about this game is the knockback effect you get from touching enemies which feels like pushing you back a quarter of the screen. That makes the knockback in games like Castlevania feel very tame in comparison. The levels have a rather complicated layout with exits not only to the left and right but also up and down and often strangely connected paths. But that seems to be typical for a Famicom/NES game of that time, probably hoping to sell more hint books in Japan *ahem*.*** labelimageminimize

[17]***This was the second 8-bit Nintendo game based on a movie. And this on was actually created to be based on a movie (not a re-branded version of another game). Quite odd, its based on a North American movie and yet never released outside of Japan for the NES.***The Goonies is a maze-like platform game based on the movie of same name. Your task is to find and rescue all your friends, who are behind closed doors which have to be opened with bombs that can be found from killed enemies. You also have to find key parts, which are also behind said doors. The game's difficulty level is low. Once you know your way through the rather small mazes the game offers not much challenge. Nevertheless it is maybe the second-best platform game for the NES at the time of its release (only beaten by Super Mario Bros.), due to its good playability and controls. Music is also well done when compared to the usual high-pitched noisy music of other early NES/Famicom games.***Released only in Japan, Americans had to settle for the playchoice-10 or Vs. [52]***As in the first Goonies game your task is to rescue your friends from the evil Fratelli gang. Goonies II features a bigger scenario and slightly better graphics than its predecessor. And besides the typical platforming scenes it has first-person adventure scenes when entering one of the many doors. But it's exactly the adventure part that I didn't like very much. Most of the time you are hitting the walls and ceilings with your fist or a hammer, hopefully finding secret items or passages. The adventure scenes are also not as good looking. The whole layout of the house and the several cave systems is much more complicated than in the first Goonies game, which was simpler, but worked better in my opinion.
